O'Grady's parents have been Jim O'Grady who is a financial adviser and Jan O'Grady. She was born in Detroit in Michigan. She was the daughter of Jim and Jan O'Grady, a financial planner. In commercials, she appeared prior to moving from Illinois' Wheaton to Los Angeles. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress for Montgomery Ward. She debuted on screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then cast as a recurring role in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
